Product Overview
This first module presents a foundation for teaching the adult learner
and provides participants with best practices of adult education. This
information helps to set the stage for future modules and provides the
essential information needed by any instructor teaching adults. The sections
included in this module are as follows:
Section 1: Adult Learner Characteristics
and Needs
The goal of Section 1 is to help you understand the characteristics of
the adult learner as a foundation for Sections 2 through 5. Self-reflection
is the main learning strategy of Section 1.
Section 2: Applying Selected adult
Learning Theories
Section 2 explains aspects of adult development, explores the characteristics
of adult thinking and cognition, and examines several of the major adult
learning theories. Activities in Section 2 are focused on their application
in the classroom.
Section 3: Using Learning Domains in
the Classroom
Section 3 explores the three domains (cognitive, affective, and psychomotor)
of Bloom’s Taxonomy and their individual components or levels. Each
domain is explored in terms of the learning it best supports.
Section 4: Brain Dominance and Learning
Styles
Section 4 explores the varied ways individuals learn as a function of
their brain dominance and preferred learning styles. Perspectives from
Roger Sperry’s Split-Brain theories, Paul McLean’s Triune
Brain Theory, Ned Herrmann’s research into brain dominance, and
Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences will be reviewed.
Section 5: Best Practices in Teaching
the Adult Learner
Section 5 is focused on strategies you can implement to effectively teach
the adult student. Its goal is to help you integrate and apply a blend
of the concepts from Sections 1 through 4 to your classroom.
