Module 5 discusses evaluation of the adult learner through formal grading
and informal assessment of progress in the classroom and in activities.
The module identifies and discusses effective and ineffective feedback,
grading, development of project criteria, and designing of evaluation
tools.
Additionally, the module discusses ways for faculty to assess their own
skills and develop plans for improvement. The sections included in this
module are as follows:
Section 1: Assessment and Evaluation
Section 1 focuses on considerations of importance when assessing the progress
of the adult learner, evaluating achievement of course objectives, and
assessing how the classroom meets the learning needs of the students.
The purposes and value of effective assessment and evaluation, techniques
for matching evaluation to course objective, methods of providing effective
feedback, and preparing students for the evaluation process will be considered.
Section 2: Grading the Adult Learner
Section 2 focuses on grading procedures for different types of graded
elements in a course. Grading philosophy, policy, and procedure will be
considered. Methods to reduce student complaints about grades and techniques
for resolving grade disputes will be reviewed. Section 2 discusses issues
surrounding academic dishonesty and recommends policy and procedure considerations.
Section 3: Design and Content of Evaluation
Tools
Section 3 focuses on considerations and techniques for designing evaluation
tools. Construction of a variety of evaluation methods is introduced as
are methods of grading tests, labs, activities, presentation, and discussion.
Section 4: Assessing Student Progress
Section 4 focuses on assessment of student progress over the course of
a term. The term “assessment” is used in Section 4 as a method
of determining students’ progress. Grades and other evaluative measures
will not be considered for purposes of progress assessment. Initial assessment
of students’ abilities relative to course objectives will be discussed
followed by methods for development of students’ skills and ongoing
assessment. Departmental and institutional applications of assessment
outcomes will be reviewed.
Section 5: Faculty Assessment
Section 5 focuses on defining faculty assessment, its purposes, and methods.
Types of faculty assessment and their advantages and disadvantages will
be reviewed. Section 5 will discuss methods for developing your own evaluation
tool, personalized to your needs. Guidelines for effective faculty assessment
programs will be reviewed and you will have the opportunity to evaluate
your assessment program according to the guidelines. Principles of applying
evaluation feedback to professional development will be considered. Finally,
some of the controversies regarding faculty assessments will be reviewed
and methods for resolving them examined.
