Module 9 discusses the many factors involved in teaching courses online.
Topics include preparation for online teaching, the competencies needed
by online faculty, communication in the online course, humanizing the
online course, and labs and hands-on activities. The sections included
in this module are as follows:
Section 1: Teaching Online: An Overview
Section 1 provides an overview of on-line instruction, emphasizing the
features of on-line course management tools and their applications in
both on-line and traditional classrooms. Section 1 will introduce elements
of online learning such as communication and course organization that
will be explored in greater detail throughout the remaining sections of
Module 9.
Section 2: Preparation and Faculty
Competencies
Section 2 provides an overview of the characteristics of the effective
on-line instructor and the considerations that an on-line instructor must
make to deliver quality instruction and service to students. Characteristics
of effective on-line students will also be examined and suggestions for
supporting the development of these skills in students will be explored.
Strategies for implementing and teaching an on-line course will be discussed
and a sample unit of an on-line course will be presented.
Section 3: Maintaining Communication
from a Distance
Section 3 focuses on the communication element of on-line communication.
The importance of effective communication cannot be underestimated, as
it is provides the foundation for all information exchange and activities
in the on-line environment. Section 3 will explore the various methods
(for example, e-mail and discussion threads) of communicating within an
on-line course management platform, discuss the advantages of each, and
identify activities that are especially suited to each method.
Section 4: Humanizing the Online Class
Section 4 focuses on making the technical experience of the on-line course
more personal and humanistic. To that end, Section 4 will emphasize the
importance of community to the online course. Section 4 will review the
benefits of community and its importance to learning and the success of
the students. Methods for establishing community by building relationships
between students and instructors will be reviewed.
Section 5: Labs and Hands-on Activities
Section 5 focuses on the development of the on-line course. Design of
the course will be discussed in terms of the typical responsibilities
of your school administration, technical support, and the instructor.
Basic considerations of design will be covered. Suggestions and the opportunity
to explore hands-on activities suitable for on-line labs will be provided.
