Product Overview

The teacher training boot camp module is designed to orient the new instructor to the school, the adult learner student population, and to teaching in general. It provides a discussion of the minimum skills, responsibilities, and attitudes required for a successful first course. This module is not designed as a thorough or extensive teacher training, but is geared to helping new instructors get started and to making the first course of teaching a success. Topics include an overview of college teaching, preparing to teach, the first days of class, day-to-day classroom responsibilities and techniques, grading and assessment, and classroom management.

Section 1: An Overview of College Faculty Responsibilities
Section 1 provides an overview of the responsibilities, required skill sets, and educational environments for the adult learner. It also describes the broad range of types of adult learners, including their needs, desires, and obstacles to learning.

Section 2: Preparing to Teach and The First Days of Class
Section 2 provides ideas for preparing for the new course and conducting the first days of class.
Organization, preparation responsibilities, review of course content, and first day activities are all explained. The section suggests several specific ideas that can be immediately implemented in the classroom.

Section 3: The Day-to-Day Classroom
Section 3 provides an overview of day-to-day classroom activities, including presentations and lectures, discussion and questioning, activities, and homework.

Section 4: Grading and Assessment
Section 4 provides an overview of the important considerations in assessing and grading the adult learner. It discusses basics of test development, provides alternatives to grading for the assessment of students, and explains some do's and don'ts of grading adults.

Section 5: Classroom Management
Section 5 provides an overview of several common difficult classroom situations, including strategies for prevention and ways to effectively deal with the problems.
